Google has announced a free beginner course for Android developers. The Kotlin beginner course teaches developers how to build Android apps from scratch.

Kotlin is one of the fasts growing programming languages on GitHub. Google's decision to replace Java with Kotlin has worked in favour of Android development. Over 70% of the top 1,000 Android apps are now powered by Kotlin. Google wants more developers to start using modern programming language and write new apps.

The Android Basics in Kotlin gives step-by-step instructions to developers on how to use the Android Studio IDE and tips on running the apps on Android devices.

Towards the end of the course, Kuan promises that students will complete the collection of Android apps to put toward a portfolio. They also need to answer a quiz at the end of each pathway within the course. The students are awarded a badge on successful completion of the quiz.

Only 1 of the 5 units of the course is available for interested students at the moment. This unit consists of 20 activities across four pathways.

Other free Kotlin courses Google offers includes Kotlin Bootcamp for Programmers, Android Kotlin Fundamentals, and Advanced Android in Kotlin
